The Middle Ages was a period of crisis and trouble. The Black Death had caused major disruption in the economy. The economy was stagnated. Then came the Renaissance. Renaissance means "Rebirth." Art and Science very much stimulated the economy through inventions, art and trade.In 1481, Leonardo Davinci applied for a job. He wrote a letter to Ludovico Sforza, later to become Duke of Milan. He wanted to work at at Sforza’s court. He was not just an artist but obviously had very high science and mathematical skills. Here is his resume. And yes, he got the job.
"Most illustrious Lord, having by now sufficiently considered the experience of those men who claim to be skilled inventors of machines of war, and having realised that the said machines in no way differ from those commonly employed, I shall endeavour, without prejudice to anyone else, to reveal my secrets to Your Excellency, for whom I offer to execute, at your convenience, all the items briefly noted below.
1. I have a model of very strong but light bridges,extremely easy to carry, by means of which you will be able to pursue of if necessary flee an enemy; I have others, which are sturdy and will resist fire as well as attack and are easy to lay down and take up. I also know ways to burn and destroy those of the enemy.
2. During a siege, I know how to dry up the water of the moats and how to construct an infinite number of bridges, covered ways, scaling ladders, and other machines for this type of enterprise.
3. If by reason of the height of the banks or the strength of the place and its position, it is impossible when besieging a place, to avail oneself of the plan of bombardment, I have methods for destroying every rock or other fortress, even if it were founded on rock.
4. I have kinds of mortar; most convenient and easy to carry; and with these I can fling small stones almost resembling a storm; and with the smoke of these cause great terror with the enemy, to his great detriment and confusion.
5. I know how to use paths and secret underground tunnels, dug without noise and following tortuous routes, to reach a given place, even if it means passing below a moat or a river.
6. I will make covered vehicles, safe and unassailable, which will penetrate enemy ranks with their artillery and destroy the most powerful troops; the infantry may follow them without meeting obstacles or suffering damage.
7. In case of need, I will make large bombards, mortars, and fire-throwing engines, of beautiful and practical design, which will be different from those presently in use.
8. Where bombardment would fail, I can make catapults, mangonels, trabocchi, or other unusual machines of marvellous efficiency, not in common use. In short, whatever the situation, I can invent an infinite variety of machines for both attack and defence.
9. And if battle is to be joined at sea, I have many very efficient machines for both attack and defence; and vessels that will resist even the heaviest cannon fire, fumes and gun-powder.
10. In peacetime, I think I can give perfect satisfaction and be the equal of anyman in architecture, in the design of buildings public and private, or to conduct water from one place to another.
I can carry out sculpture in marble, bronze, and clay; and in painting can do any kind of work as well as any man, whoever he be.
Moreover, the bronze horse could be made that will be to the immortal glory and eternal honour of the lord your father of blessed memory and of the illustrious house of Sforza.
And if any of the items mentioned above appears to anyone impossible or impractical, I am ready to give a demonstration in your park or in any other place that should please Your Excellency - to whom I recommend myself in all humility, etc.

I find Davinci fascinating, I think I can associate with him more than any other artist. This may have to do with the fact that like him I enjoy science as well as art. What is most interesting about his resume is that on 9 out of 10 of his qualifications he list the things he can do to help with war. I think Davinci was doing what we do today, he was making his resume looking good for the job he was applying for. Just like today, in the middle ages the jobs were starting to thin out and he knew that if he got a job in the Sofzoras court he would have all the resources he needed to pursue the things that really interested him. I have done some reading and found that most of the "war" machines Davinci designed while employed for the duke were never actually built. In fact most of them were WAY ahead of the times, for instance the covered vehicle he talks about in item 6 is actually a TANK! Can you imagine what the world would be like if we had Tanks in the middle ages? In a way I am glad the he never got round to building some of these inventions. In comparing it to the other article I think the world would be much better if we had more people like him today. We need people that can think with more of the right side of the brain to get us out of the mess we have gotten our economy in, we need people that can look at the whole "picture" and come up with creative solutions that think outside of the box. Could Davinci fix the world of today? Maybe not, but I am sure he would have come up with something interesting none the less.

Da Vinci's well rounded talents and knowledge of science, math, inventing, and the arts, were important in the past as these qualities are today. People who boast these abilities are the ones in today's slow economy that are landing the jobs the rest of us want. If we educate ourselves, and are taught to think outside of the box, and explore new solutions to old problems, we will be more marketable in the job force. A person with such well spread out capabilities can mold themselves to fit the times, whether those are the middle ages or today's recession.

Da vinci represents the most well rounded person one can be. He was able to combine both the left and right brain and make it into beautiful and useful works of art and science. One cannot describe Da vinci's work as merely art or only science. It is his combination of both that captured attention. I think we most defiantly need people like this in our economy today. We need creative people who are going to come up with solutions which are unusual and new. Da Vini had very forward thinking ideas for his time and always, not just in times of hardship, we as a society always need people who are think like him. I think if we had more people like DaVinci in our society then we would be able to come up with more creative ideas for solutions to some of our problems. We need more people who use their left and right brains to figure out what is best for our society as a whole. The ideas that everyone else has came up with so far isn’t working the way we wanted them to so I think we need someone just like DaVinci to come up with some new ideas that are creative and different. We need someone to think outside the box and come up with something totally different than what everyone else has proposed so far to fix our economy.

I think Da Vinci is a very interesting and smart individual. He has knowledge in all of the important subjects including art. This also makes him a very well rounded person. In most cases you see people that are just good at one or the other like math/science and literature/art, but he was good at both. Having both of those capabilities makes it hard to describe the work that he has done but the people that do have such capabilities would benefit the economy and the ability to have more jobs in this age.
It is very important that more people be like Davinci especailly in a ppor economy like ours. Time is rough just like it was during the middle ages. People who are flexible and are able to do more than one thing have a much better chance of getting a job than someone is only has one talent. This is kind of like being able to use your left side and right side of the brain. It is important that young children are taught more than one talent in order to better succeed.

The economy of the middle ages can be compared to the economy of today because just like in the middle ages we have been having a slow decline in job opportunities today. Da Vinci took advantage of his creative ability by making sure to list in detail all of his war plans. He was obviously very smart and knew that if he got a job at Sfzoras court he would have access to plenty of the supplies and resources that he needed to carry out his plans. I do think that we need more people with the creative mindset that Da Vinci had. The more creative learning and teaching we have will allow us to have more and more job opportunities.

We could definately use more people comparable to Davinci. His mind is like a deep pool of ideas that never end. Theres no similarity to the "renaissance" YET, but there are many similarities to the the Middle Ages. They were in a deep depression and had many hard times like us. There was a dramatic breakdown of the roman society and churches were just begining to unify and gain some justice over the king. Now churches are not struggling as much but our society is breaking down slowly.DaVinci's ceative skills gave him a small edge over the people of his time but only because people in that time couldn's see as well in those times. This is the most impressive resume I've ever seen! I definitely think that our society could benefit from people with skills like DaVinci's. I think it is most important to note that his inventions were "beautiful and practical," using both left and right brain skills. The "Whole New Mind" post suggests that we are in dire need of left-brainers, but I think that it is more accurate to say we need DaVincis, people who can incorporate science AND art into their work. This is certainly just as true today as it was in the Renaissance.

In my opinion I think that Davinci is top 2 if not the best artist of all time. No one on the planet ever(besides a rare few) had the talent that he did. But it is good to understand that he wasnt just another artist. He could excel in many other areas of the world such as math and science. Yes, I do feel as if we need more people that have creative skills comparable to Davinci's because it could be really useful in today's economy. I do believe that there is a similarity between the reaniassance and our economy today because we are having so many problems economically and I guess you can say that we are in the "rebirth" period of trying to make things better. Davinci's creative skills did give him an edge simply because he showed that he was intelligent and he probably stood out from the others, which is what an employer would look for.
In all seriousness, there were probably a lot more people who had similar resumes. Putting Da Vinci's resume up without any comparison is irrelevant if you want to compare the two economies. Bill Gates, Donald Trump, or any other person in Forbes are easily surpassing the shoes of Da Vinci fueling the economy with ideas and jobs. To say that it's not happening now would be and is ignorance.

This letter he wrote alone gives me the impression that he is the best at what he does, and he knows what he is talking about. Not only that, but he knows how to sell himself. I think there are similarities in the Renaissance and our society today. There is a continuing need for someone who is skilled at thier job and knows how to get things done in todays society and it is demonstrated in the post that there was also a need for the same thing back then. If there was not Davinci would not have gotten the job, nor would he have went as far as to write the letter in the first place. His creative skills made him stand out from the rest, and Ludovico Sforza saw this.

Da Vinci was not only an amazing artist he was also a great thought processor. He took his art; which were just ideas in his head, and he turned them into useful inventions. He really used both sides of his brain and invented things that were useful in battle and combat.
I don't think you can exactly compare the two time periods, becaus I do not think America is in a total rebirth. Otherwise, I do think that a person with a mind like Da Vinci's would be a great asset to our time period.
I would hire him. Davinci was a fascinating individual. The mental traits that he possessed were and still are a rarity. I have managed others most of my adult career and I can honestly say that the hardest part of my job is finding qualified employees that can work independently as-well as a team member and have the ability to think outside the box. Davinci was a well rounded individual that was able to accomplish much and if he had been granted the authority, he would have been able to accomplish much more. I think he was a remarkable man.

Who is to say that Da Vinci’s visions/art for the future of technology would even compare to the average fourth grader, one that dreams up creative and interesting ideas and expresses it through drawings. I will say that Da Vinci had great ideas for his time, which some of them were out of his league in developing. It wasn’t until a few hundred years later that some of his vision became life. Who is not to say that what our children dream about might one day come to life? I do indeed believe that he help the economy by parting the waters on creative art. Which, in turn, his art, boosted the economy and help develop the Renaissance time period and for this he is hailed as a father of art.

When you look at the companies and jobs that are thriving today, we see nothing but ceo's and organizations that are thinking "outside the box". I think we do need more creative people like Davinci, but I don't think they could send someone a resume stating things that they can do. Most employers would want a job history and specific examples of bottom-line results. As far as similarities in the Renaissance and our economy today, yes, we are in a time of crisis and trouble, yes, there has been a disruption in our economy, no, it was not caused by disease. But as far as a rebirth, I do see that happening. I think that Obama will be a "rebirth" of sorts for our nation and world as a whole, as he tries to unite divided nations and make peace with our enemies. If we are all together as one on this planet, the economic issues at hand are better able to be resolved.
Back in the Middle Ages, he definitely had an edge. Now a days, not so much. Unless a job is wanting someone creative, often times they go with who looks good on paper. If companies would go with the more creative individuals, they would probably come up with some unique and creative way to solve issues the company might face.

Last semester, I had to write a paper on da Vinci... I entitled it, "Bastard Genius Wows the World"... my professor loved it.
I think that we do more people willing to think outside of the box, but they should be able to back it up- Leonardo could. I do think with today's economy, it pays to flaunt what you have, but don't lie about it... that will catch up with you.
I think his creative words gave him a boost, but then again, they may have just wanted the opportunity to see him in action... you never know with people.

Yes, we need more DaVinci's in the world today. There should always be improvements to be made; people need them to stretch their brains more than to make work easier. I think our education is where it begins, if we had more resources in our state schools all the way from elementary and up, more people would be attuned to the creative process. I think it would help our economy greatly if we had more workers with ideas of how to make things more efficient, etc. Our schools just don't value right brain activities as much as left brain activities, thats where the problem is. A Renaissance is what we need, we need to have a burst of energy and spirit in the workplace. People getting depressed is making other people depressed and it's piling on top of each other and making it worse every day. I think Da Vinci was the brain child of the renaissance period. He single-handedly reshaped the way thinking was done, and also played a fundamental roll in the reincarnation of the art scene. Hence, I feel that people in today's society can only benefit from inventors like Da Vinci. The other day I was watching a History Channel special on how Da Vinci's inventions were centuries before their time. In trying to draw a comparison with the level of skills that he had is very hard even in a competitive world that we live in today. However, it is always interesting to see how Art is woven into the creative and innovative fabric of the truly gifted.
DaVinci was an amazing artist and historical figure. He had the ability of using both sides of his brain which is rare among humans. Most people are one or the other and their brains operate in a manner to better suit their skills but DaVinci was able to fuse his ideas together. This is turn enabled him to become not only a famous artist but also a renowned scientist and mathematician. It is hard to determine whether or not he would even be able to salvage our economy at this point. I think the world definitely needs more people like Leonardo. Leonardo was and is best known hink tas an artist, the creator of such masterpieces as the Mona Lisa, Madonna of the Rocks, and The Last Supper. Yet Leonardo was far more than a great artist: he had one of the best scientific minds of his time. He made painstaking observations and carried out research in fields ranging from architecture and civil engineering to astronomy to anatomy and zoology to geography, geology and paleontology. In today's economy, I think Da vinci would definitely survive, depite our current hardship.
Davinci was a genius. He knew that by studying all the arts and sciences he was setting himself apart in the eyes of the public. Without a doubt, these traits can be applied to aspiring workers in this economy. If public America gave more of their time to learning these things, there would be a distinction among workers for the creative side of the market.
So, the answer is yes. Davinci's ideology can certainly be applied to modern America to create a new type of market that focuses both on creativity and scientific knowledge.

I find Da Vinci fascinating; Da Vinci has a very forward thinking mentality I think I can connect with him more than any other artist.
